THE DIFFERENCE ONE LIFE CAN MAKE – HULDA CROOKS
THE OLDEST WOMAN TO REACH THE PEAK OF MOUNTAIN FUJI-AT AGE 91
Two people approach age 70, one of them thinks that life is almost over and begins to wind up affairs. In fact, the individual thinks that old age has set in and that the body is deteriorating and is becoming weakened and probably dreads the inevitability of sickness and disease and consequently death, retires from life, and reclines awaiting death.
On the other hand, at age 66 a woman thinks that it’s time to dream another dream-it’s time to scale mountains. She thinks that as she advances in years, she is advancing in strength and her youthfulness is sustained by the vibrancy of her spirit.
Hulda Crooks of Loma Lindo, California, a 90-year-old grandmother with a dream to become the oldest person to hike to the top of 14, 494-foot high Mt. Whitney, reached 13,777 feet before withdrawing because of altitude sickness, fatigue, and the threat of lightning. Rather than giving up on her dream because of the obvious obstacles, she got back into the game of life, and at age 89 in 1985; she reached the summit of mountain Whitney.
In 1987, at age 91 she accomplished yet another extraordinary feat-she became the oldest woman to complete the ascent of Mt. Fuji in Japan. She was 101 years when she died. Therefore, I dare you to live full and die empty, rather than allow your potential to be cut short by the thoughts of sickness, old age, and death.
Remember, if you think you are young; you are. If you think you are old; you are. You become what you think.
